HOW I WORK

What to Expect in Your First Session

Your first session is an opportunity for us to meet and explore whether we're a good fit to work together. We'll discuss what's brought you to counselling, your current challenges, and what you hope to achieve. I'll explain my approach and answer any questions you have about the therapeutic process.

This initial meeting is also an opportunity for you to get a sense of how I work and whether you feel comfortable in the therapeutic setting. There's no pressure to commit beyond this first session. In fact, I offer this first session to you at no risk. If we decide, for any reason, not to proceed with working together, I will not require you to pay for that session. I want clients to be comfortable about exploring the idea of working with me, knowing they have nothing to lose.

You don't need to prepare anything specific, though some people find it useful to think about what they'd like to focus on. The most important thing is to come as you are and be open about your experiences and concerns.

Trauma & Grief Processing

Compassionate, specialised support for those dealing with childhood trauma, complex PTSD, bereavement, or significant loss. This service offers a safe environment for processing difficult experiences at your own pace, fostering resilience and healing.

This work supports adults who have experienced childhood trauma, developmental trauma, complex PTSD, recent bereavement, significant loss, or those struggling with the ongoing impact of traumatic experiences on their daily life and relationships.

I use trauma-informed counselling with gentle exploration techniques, somatic awareness, and evidence-based approaches. We work slowly and safely to process traumatic memories, reduce emotional overwhelm, and rebuild a sense of safety and connection with yourself.

Clients often experience reduced trauma symptoms, improved emotional regulation, decreased hypervigilance or dissociation, better sleep patterns, and increased ability to form healthy relationships. Many report feeling more grounded and present in their daily lives.

The Counselling Process Explained

Counselling is a collaborative process where we work together to understand your experiences, identify patterns, and create meaningful change. Rather than giving advice, I help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a supportive environment.

Early sessions often focus on understanding your current situation, background, and goals. As we establish trust and rapport, we can delve deeper into patterns and address the underlying issues that impact your well-being. The pace is always guided by what feels right for you.

Throughout the process, you'll develop greater self-awareness, acquire new coping strategies, and gain insights that enable you to navigate challenges more effectively. Change occurs gradually, with small shifts that accumulate over time into a meaningful transformation.

Session Structure and Frequency

Sessions last 50 minutes and typically take place once a week at the same time each week. This consistency helps create a stable therapeutic relationship and maintains momentum in your personal work.

Each session begins with checking in about how you're feeling and what's on your mind. We then explore whatever feels most important that day, which might be current challenges, past experiences, or patterns you've noticed between sessions.

Sessions are conducted either online via a secure video platform or in person. We can discuss which option works best for your circumstances and preferences. Some people find it helpful to alternate between formats depending on their needs.

Length of Counselling

The duration of counselling varies significantly depending on your individual circumstances and goals. Some people benefit from short-term work focused on specific issues, while others prefer longer-term exploration and personal development.

We'll regularly review your progress and discuss how you're finding the process. You're always in control of when to reduce frequency or end counselling. Some people work intensively for several months, while others prefer ongoing support over a more extended period.

There's no set timeline or pressure to continue for any particular length of time. The most important thing is that counselling feels helpful and meaningful to you.
